Sound Waves

Sound waves are made by a source, such as the vibrating diaphragm of a speaker or your vocal cords when you speek. The sound source creates vibrations in the surrounding medium (normal this is the air). As the source vibrates this medium, the vibrations propagate away from the source at the speed of sound, this forms a sound wave. Its a bit like when you drop somthing in water and you see the ripples disperce away from the center.

The frequence of a wave is how many wavelengths pass over a given time. The SI unit for wave frequency is the hertz (Hz), where 1 hertz equals 1 wave passing a fixed point in 1 second.
