Gas Extinguisher

you probably know that some fire extigwisher use Carbon dioxide (CO2), but did you know you can make your own.

in this experiment/demonstration CO2 it preduced be the chemical reaction between an acid and carbanate. in this instants the acid we used was vinigar (ethanoic acid) and the carbonate was baking powder (sodium Bicarbonate)

generic equastion:

acid + carbonate -> a salt + carbon dioxide + water

word equastion:

ethanoic acid + sodium bicarbonate -> carbon dioxide + water + sodium acetate

balenced symble equastion:

CH3COOH + NaHCO3 -> CO2 + H2O + CH3COONa

carbon dioxide has a greater dencity "is heveor" than most of the gases in the air this meens when it is produced it stays in the container and pushes out (displaces) the rest of the air. this is also the reason it can be pored as it flows downwards.

the reason it puts the fire out is as it pushes it it pushes the oxegen away, whitch is one of the 3 things required for combustion.

And remember; Dont try this at home, try it at a friends home.
